16-Year-Old Trapped Under Runaway Vehicle
A 16-year-old female juvenile became trapped underneath her vehicle while attempting to park at the Capitola Mall. The girl exited her vehicle and thought she had put the transmission into park. Once the girl exited her vehicle the car began to roll towards 41st Avenue. The girl then attempted to re-enter the moving car in order to stop it. While attempting to enter the car the girl was pulled underneath the vehicle by the rear driverâs side tire and dragged approximately 120 feet. The girl was trapped underneath the car as it came to rest in a planter area against a tree. The girl was removed from underneath the vehicle by Central firefighters and Capitola police officers. The victim was transported to Dominican Hospital and flown to Valley Medical Center for trauma evaluation.

Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor, Petty Theft, Outstanding Warrant
Maribel Rivas, age 35, was arrested at Sears in the Capitola Mall for shoplifting. According to police records Rivas was stealing DVDs from the store and giving them to a 14-year-old juvenile who was concealing the merchandise. The juvenile was cited and released at the scene and Rivas was transported to Santa Cruz County Jail.

Teen Charged as Adult in La Selva Beach Murder
Leopoldo Alejandro Cortes, age 17, of Santa Cruz, a former Aptos High School student, has been charged with murder in the stabbing death of 22-year-old Christopher Carr. Santa Cruz County Sheriffâs deputies responded to the scene after receiving a report of an assault. When deputies arrived they discovered a large house party of young adults in their early 20s. Inside the home deputies found Carr who suffered multiple stab wounds in the back and torso area. Carr was pronounced dead at the scene. According to statements from nearly 75 individuals who attended the party, Cortes and three or four other individuals arrived at the party uninvited. Carr became involved in a verbal argument with the young men who were asked to leave but refused. During the argument Carr was attacked by Cortes and stabbed. Cortes fled the scene and several individuals attending the party were attempting to leave the scene as deputies arrived. According to Sheriffâs Lieutenant Phil Wowak, âCortes was positively identified within hours of the incident and arrested at approximately 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning.â The murder weapon has been recovered and there are no outstanding suspects in this case. Cortes is being housed at Santa Cruz County Juvenile Hall and his bail has been set at $750,000. Cortes has not entered a plea and a hearing has been continued until later this week. Sheriffâs detectives still believe there may be more witnesses to this incident. Anyone with information about this case who has not already been interviewed is asked to call 831-454-2311.

Marvin Ramirez, age 26, was arrested after attacking his girlfriend inside the restroom at Burger King on 41st Avenue. The victim was assaulted after Ramirez made accusations of infidelity. The man grabbed the woman by her shirt and began choking her. Ramirez was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail.

Burglary, Assault with a Deadly Weapon,
Making Terrorist Threats, Vandalism
Capitola officers were dispatched to a residence on Derby Avenue after receiving a report of a disturbance. Officers were told by the victim that he was chased by suspects in a vehicle to his home. The suspects apparently chased the victim into his home and threatened the man with knives. The suspects in this case surrounded the victimâs vehicle, flattened all four tires and scratched the hood of the car. The only description available is that there are three suspects and they were riding in a yellow Buick low rider. According to Sergeant Eller of the Capitola Police Department this is a gang-related incident.

Vehicle Rollover Collision
The California Highway Patrol, the Scotts Valley Police Department and the Scotts Valley Fire Department responded to a rollover collision on southbound Highway 17 just north of Granite Creek Road. The driver of a white pickup truck, a 55-year-old male, was not responding at the scene and suffered major lacerations to the head and face. He was flown to an out of county trauma center.

B.A.D.G.E.S Task Force Begins
During the month of February, B.A.D.G.E.S. (Before Aggressive Driving Gets Everyone Stopped) will begin throughout Santa Cruz County. The purpose of the program is to target aggressive drivers throughout the county of Santa Cruz. The program has been very successful in the past and is aimed at reducing traffic collisions as well as providing safer streets for motorists and pedestrians. On Tuesday, Feb. 7 local law enforcement agencies through-out the county will be increasing enforcement detail aimed at reducing aggressive driving on city streets and County highways. Areas that have generated citizen traffic complaints will be targeted as well as frequently traveled roadways. Seat belt laws will be strictly enforced and vehicles driven by unlicensed or suspended drivers will be towed and stored. B.A.D.G.E.S. is being hosted by the Scotts Valley Police Department and all law enforcement agencies in the County will be participating in the program.
