Superintendent of Schools Candidate Fundraising Report
Early campaign fundraising statements filed by candidates in the race for County Superintendent of Schools show two candidates out of the five raising more than $30,000. Contender Michael Watkins has raised some $17,000 through Mar. 17, while Assistant Superintendent of Schools Rowland Baker collected $16,446. Another filing is due at the end of the month.
Candidate Rebecca Garcia raised $7,540. Of the total, she personally donated $2,000, while developer George Ow Jr. contributed $1,000 and Santa Cruz County Supervisor and Watsonville realtor Tony Campos anted up another $500.
To date, Sandra Nichols has raised $6,035, of which she has spent $5,990.48. Her husband Peter Nichols, a Pajaro Valley school teacher, lent the campaign $5,000. Her largest contributor was Watsonville engineer Bernard Feldman, who contributed $500.
Watkins loaned his campaign $6,000, while Baker put $11,900 into his campaign so far. From statements, Baker had the most contributors of any filing; however his donations were smaller than Watkins!
Retired County School administrator Mike James donated $500, while current County Office of Education employee Sandy Mast contributed $1,600 to Watkins’ campaign. Noel Hayes gave $1,000, while Louis Jemison donated $500. Watkins spent $2,000 on brochures and another $2,500 on campaign consulting from Bizquests of Aptos.
Baker listed 30 individual early contributors, with $250 from Graniterock CEO Bruce Woolpert and $500 from former Santa Cruz City schools administrator Don Iglesias.
As of Mar. 17, Baker had spent $8,515, with the majority going to campaign filing fees.
