Fire Season Over, But Don't Burn Yet
Cal Fire's local unit announced the close of the fire season on Oct. 19 following significant rainfall.

The decision by Chief John Ferreira allows public and commercial entities with open burning permits to resume those activities within Cal Fire's jurisdiction.

Resident must still wait until at least Dec. 1 for the ban on burning near homes to be lifted, warned Battalion Chief Kay Price.

State parks will conduct one such permitted prescribed burn at Wilder Ranch through Oct. 30 as conditions allow. The effort helps reduce the threat of wildfire and enhances natural resources in the park, according to a statement by state parks.

Some trails at Wilder Ranch may be closed for safety during this time.

Cal Fire's San Mateo/Santa Cruz unit responded to more than 130 wildland fires within the two counties during this year's burn season, including the nearly 7,000-acre Lockheed fire in August.

The vast majority of these fires were less than 10 acres. Cal Fire credited quick response and the cooperation of the residents in maintaining 100 feet of defensible space around their homes and structures with helping keep these wildland fires small and reducing property damage.
