Fraudulent Check

A Felton resident fell victim to a common scam involving a fraudulent check. The victim sold a vehicle that had been advertised for sale on craigslist.org and received payment in excess of the sales amount. The buyer was told to cash the check and send the difference. Unfortunately, the check was a fake.

"This is a really common occurrence," warned sheriff's Sgt. Dan Campos. "These crooks come up with really creative reasons why the checks or postal money orders are for more [than the sale price]. No one should ever accept money from a buyer beyond the purchase price."
