Target Still Shopping for New Spot in Santa Cruz
Target stores continues to look at expanding its presence in Santa Cruz County beyond its single Watsonville location following its decision to abandon plans to build a store in Scotts Valley.

"We remain interested in bringing another Target to Santa Cruz County, but it would be premature to provide any specific details or speculate on any timing," Target spokesperson Hadley Barrows told The Post.

The discount merchandiser has been frequently mentioned as a possible tenant in the former Gottschalks location in the Capitola Mall.

That 100,000-square-foot, two-story spot became available after the venerable department store chain went bankrupt and closed in July.

The space is smaller than the average general merchandise Target, which according to the store's website averages 126,000 square feet. The store proposed for La Madrona Drive in Scotts Valley was 143,000 square feet.

Another "big box" location sitting empty is the former Circuit City on Soquel Drive adjacent to Toys R Us. At only 27,000 square feet, however, it seems an unlikely match to accommodate a Target.
