No Contest Plea in Animal Case
Slaughterhouse owner Efrain T. Martinez, 54, pled no contest on Nov. 5 to animal neglect charges relating to his Watsonville-based slaughter and feedlot business. He was ordered to pay restitution of $868 to Santa Cruz County Animal Services and $190 in court costs.

In May 2008, Animal Services investigators cited Martinez for failure to provide food, water and proper care for his animals. Officials found severely emaciated animals with infections and rotting hooves. Animal Services impounded 20 goats, four kids (baby goats), two sheep, a cow and two rabbits.

One of the goats was euthanized after veterinary treatment was unsuccessful, but a second goat has made a full recovery and is currently living in Orland, California, at the Farm Sanctuary, a nonprofit farm animal rescue group.

"We are pleased the District Attorney's office worked so hard on this case to ensure that all animals, even those destined for slaughter, are protected from cruelty and neglect," said Todd Stosuy, field services manager for Santa Cruz County Animal Services. "Farm Sanctuary and Animal Place of Vacaville were instrumental in caring for many of these neglected animals."
