Breaking News: Valley Need for Food Outstrips Supplies
Donations of Food, Money Being Collected through Nov. 24
Due to unprecedented demand, Valley Churches United's annual Thanksgiving food distribution on Sunday, Nov. 22, ran out of supplies with 89 families still in line. Organizers are asking the community to help them meet the need.
"We are in desperate need of traditional holiday food items and grocery store certificates, turkey certificates (we currently cannot accept turkeys as our freezers have failed) or cash to purchase needed items," said director Linda Lovelace.
The group is accepting donations on Monday, Nov. 23, and Tuesday, Nov. 24, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holiday Boutique, 9400 Highway 9 in Ben Lomond. Credit card donations may be called in to (831) 336-8258 extension 227.
Drivers also will be picking up from VCUM barrels in Safeway, New Leaf, Johnnies, Ben
Lomond Market, Scotts Valley Market and local post offices.
Lovelace thanked the many community members who have already donated and volunteered their time, but said this year's tough economy placed additional stresses on many families.
"We are down to the wire and can't imagine not serving everyone who needs help. It would be a first. There were 680 signups to start with. In addition, 96 more came in last week, and 23 more signed up today (Nov. 22) for an astounding total of 799! Traditionally Thanksgiving has been the holiday with lower signups than Christmas as many folks band together. But WHOA! We fear what may be ahead of us," Lovelace wrote in a plea to supporters.
