Capitola Smoking Ban Will Take Effect in January
Capitola city council voted Nov. 24 to ban smoking in 16 city-owned outdoor locations. The ordinance will get a second reading Dec. 10 and take effect 30 days after that.

Smokers will face a $30 fine for violating the ban.

All city parks, the wharf, the Esplanade, the Stockton Street Bridge, the library and city hall will join Capitola Beach as no smoking zones.

The exact date that enforcement begins will likely depend on when signs go up, said community development director Jamie Goldstein. If they aren't ready by Jan. 10, smokers may get a short grace period.

The ordinance covers the following areas:
— Capitola Beach;
— the Esplanade right of way;
— Stockton Ave. right of way between Wharf Road and the Esplanade;
— Monterey Avenue south of Lawn Way;
— Esplanade Park;
— Capitola Wharf;
— Jade Street Park;
— the city's Library property and the Rispin mansion property;
— Peery Park;
— Soquel Creek Park;
— 101 Stockton Avenue;
— City Hall property;
— Noble Gulch Park;
— Monterey Park; and,
— Cortez Park.
