Obscure Education Funding Rule Boosts SLVUSD Income
By Linda Fridy
Officials at the San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District announced that the district qualified for $1.2 million in additional funding for the current year after following through on a little-used portion of the state's education code.

Chief business officer Liann Reyes said she and others have been researching and working on amending how payments to the district are calculated for several months. When she confirmed the new figures on a state report, she finally felt confident enough to share the good news at a Mar. 16 all-district staff meeting.

"We've been on pins and needles," Reyes said. "I'm thrilled for our students."

The district and others throughout the state lost $225 a student in funding, about $607,000 for San Lorenzo Valley. This new income will offset that loss and help with other cuts.

Only 20 other districts out of roughly 1,400 in the state qualify for this money, known as basic aid supplemental funds.

The district's excitement is tempered by the knowledge that neighboring colleagues have not been so fortunate.

"We're very cognizant of the pain of others around us," said Reyes.

With help from the County Office of Education, Reyes used a portion of the education code that allowed her district to access funding that its Ocean View charter school otherwise prevented.
