Great White Again in Monterey
A young white shark swims in the aquarium's Outer Bay exhibit. It joined the exhibit on Aug. 31
A young great white shark placed on display Aug. 31 at the Monterey Bay Aquarium continues to thrive in the million-gallon Outer Bay exhibit. The 5-foot, 8-inch, 104-pound male is currently the only live white shark on exhibit anywhere in the world.

In 2004-05 a female great white was caught and exhibited at the Aquarium for 198 days before being returned to the wild. That was the first time a great white had ever survived in captivity for more than 16 days.

On Sept. 9 the young male took his first meal since arrival, a two-pound salmon steak dangled from a line by Aquarium staff. By keeping him well fed, the staff hope he will not begin hunting his tankmates, as the female did.

The Aquarium intends to keep the current shark on long-term exhibit as a way to change public attitudes and promote stronger protection for great whites.

Little is known about the life history of white sharks. They are highly migratory, which makes them very difficult to study or observe. Partly because they are slow to reproduce the species is in decline, and is now protected in U.S. waters as well as other nations.

Each year since 1992 the Aquarium has sought to capture and tag sharks for release. In the last four years seven juveniles have been tagged, with initial data indicating they tend to remain in the warm water off southern California, venturing as far as Baja California.

The shark can be viewed at the Aquarium daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., or live online by visiting www.mbayaq.org/efc/ efc_outerbay/outerbay_cam.asp.
