Capitola Beach Bandstand Construction Begins
By Michael Thomas
On Apr. 6, contractors will break ground on a new bandstand at Esplanade Park in Capitola Village. That is, if the weather permits. Council member Kirby Nicol, who led fundraising efforts for the project, said that the late arrival of spring has pushed the start date back.
Now it appears the project won't be complete in time for the classic car show slated for May 20 as was previously hoped. And the cost of building the bandstand has swollen from $100,000 to as much as $180,000.
The engineering firm, Bowman and Williams, racked up a $27,000 bill on the design specifications and drawings alone.
"When we envisioned the project, we thought this would be a big two car garage with no walls on it. How much could that cost?" Nicol said.
Turns out, it will cost quite a bit.
When completed, the stage will have built in sound and lighting equipment. Since the stage sits just steps from the Pacific Ocean, it will require a more costly coat of weatherproof paint.
In spite of the increased cost, Nicol is confident that the project can be completed entirely with private donations.
"Our fundraising is looking very positive right now," he said. The Wharf to Wharf Race, for which Nicol is also a veteran organizer, got the fundraising going early on with a donation of $20,000.
The City pitched in a small amount of money to pay for early design work, and since then, the Capitola Public Safety Foundation assumed oversight of the project.
The community support has poured in. San Lorenzo Lumber has donated about $5,000 worth of building materials. Devcon Construction has pledged manpower to the project. According to Nicol, fundraising is almost complete, in spite of the cost increases.
If the weather improves, the project should be complete by the middle of June.
