Dillian White waited years as the “next man” for the WBC Heavyweight Championship. Whyte’s chance finally came on Saturday night in London and the dream opportunity turned into a nightmare as Tyson Fury badly outsmarted him before losing out hard in the final seconds of round six.
Whyte tried to shuffle his game of jumping, and came out in the southpaw position. Tactics didn’t seem to bother Fury much, as the champ battled his perfect game plan, holding out, mixing punches and driving left hooks with solid body work.
As Fury’s dominance escalated, Whyte appeared to be frustrated, leading to several victories as heads hit, elbows thrown, and rabbit punched. The referee lost control of the match in the fourth round as the two giants refused to listen to his instructions to break.
Once the action reverted to something like a boxing match, Fury went straight back to exercising control with his reach advantage, forcing Whyte to take more chances to get close from a distance.
Ultimately, the Fury jab would determine the last minute in round six as he followed up with a big-hit hit that stunned Whyte and sent him to the canvas. Whyte beat the count but while trying to walk to the referee his tally wasn’t there and he tripped the ropes, leaving the referee with no choice but to concede the fight at the 2:59 mark of round 6.

“Listen, Dillian White is a warrior,” Fury said after the fight. “I think he’s going to be the world champion. But I’m one of the greatest heavyweights of all time and unfortunately for Delian, he had to face me here tonight.”
The overhead shot was similar to Alexander Povetkin’s that put White to sleep in their 2020 match. Whyte will come back to avenge that loss, but he likely won’t get that chance as Fury’s next move will likely be a four-belt unification match – or the promised retirement him again after the fight.
“You know, I promised my beautiful wife that after the Battle of Wilder 3, that fight would be as I meant it,” said Fury. “But I was offered to fight at Wembley at home and I think I deserve it and owe it [to the fans]. Now it’s all over. I have to be a man of my word and I think that’s it. This may be the last curtain for the Gypsy King.”
Elsewhere on the card, Eiko Isoman took on the job against Darren Tetley in order to win the unanimous decision. Nick Ball defeated Isaac Lowe before the referee came to stop the competition in the sixth round. Fury’s half-brother Tommy is back in action to tackle Daniel Bocianski with a six-round referee decision.
