Many phones today support eSIM, which is a digital SIM card that does not require a physical carrier card to be installed in the device. However, even this technology requires a separate chip, which takes up some space in the phone circuit.
Now Qualcomm announce First embedded SIM certificate or name. It offers the same cardless digital connectivity and eSIM security, but the iSIM is built into the phone’s processor.
At the moment, it is not clear which phones will be the first to use iSIM, but the technology supports the same eSIM standards, which means that there will be no need to change providers’ systems. The only sure thing is that the first iSIM phones will have Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processors.
Global iSIM sales are expected to reach 300 million by 2027 and will work in conjunction with SIM cards and eSIMs.
