Nikos Kanderes, a meteorologist and former director of EMY, spoke to iefimerida.gr about the weather for the next period and the heat waves that have been prevailing in the country for the past few days.
At the same time, he compared this year’s July temperature with July 2023 and concluded that “last July will turn out to be hotter than this year” because, as he notes, “in July 2023, the wave with heat “CLEON”, Athens reference station New Philadelphia and 37 Degree heat wave onset value, 37 and there were 20 days above”.
In more detail, according to him, one day 45 degrees Celsius, one day 44, one 43, four days 42 degrees, one 41, three days 39, three days 38, another 5 days 37 degrees.
“The Ellinico radio polling showed 26.0 and 27.8 degrees at 850 hPa, breaking the record for the absolute maximum of this magnitude for July,” said Mr. Conderes notes.
Conversely, Athens in July 2024 had two days with 39 degrees, three days with 38 and another three days with 37 degrees until Sunday 14/7 in Athens.
NEW EMY EMERGENCY BULLETIN: Heat wave to peak at 43 degrees Wednesday and Thursday
“Since the current heat wave lasts until the end of next week, it will be almost impossible to compare the length of days in 2023, let alone the values recorded last year. Even with another wave in late July,” notes the former director of the National Weather Service.
The heat wave is waning
When asked when the heat wave that has been raging in many parts of the country for the past few days will begin to subside, Mr. Candorus said: “By the end of Friday, temperatures will drop. The trend shows that the heat wave will begin to subside from Wednesday-Thursday and there will be no shortage of sea urchins from the Thrace and Macedonia regions in the following days. Looks like we don’t have anything useful so far next week.”
