A rare opportunity for space lovers – and not only – because in the early hours of Saturday 27/5 they will be able to see a massive star explode from their home.
Of course, this phenomenon will be visible even with a small telescope as long as it is far from city lights, but for those who do not have one, they can watch the phenomenon through the virtual telescope project, which will be broadcast live, from 01:30 Greek time.
However, it should be noted that since everything depends on the weather conditions, the event may be delayed or even canceled due to bad conditions.
The star’s explosion is called a supernova – in Greek supernova – and it can instantly light up an entire galaxy!
It emits more energy than our sun… over its lifetime. Indeed, although it is a star that “dies” with the explosion, its death becomes the main source of the heavy elements that we observe in the universe and that fuel the formation of new star systems.
On Saturday, the supernova will occur in the Pinwheel galaxy, also known as Messier 101. This is a galaxy with an almost perfect spiral structure, oriented towards Earth and relatively close (it is 21 million light-years from Earth).
