Lorne Michaels seemed to echo Che’s sentiments, saying it would be a “year of change” for the show’s layout.
Next week is the end ofSaturday Night LiveSeason 47, and the show’s summer vacation are always accompanied by rumors of cast members leaving.
“SNL” has become increasingly flexible in recent years, allowing prominent cast members to take hiatus to work on other projects in an effort to keep them in the show. However, the grueling schedule inevitably progresses and most of the cast members eventually advance.
One name could be plotting his exit? Michael Che, who has co-hosted “Weekend Update” with Colin Jost since 2014. The two men are also the show’s lead writers, but that arrangement could change very soon. In a new interview with New York timesChe revealed that he does not plan to stay around “SNL” for much longer.
“My head has been about to leave for the past five seasons,” Che said. “I think I’ve stayed here longer than I’ll be here. This show is designed for younger voices, and at some point, there’s going to be something more exciting to watch in the middle of the show than me and Idiot Jost.”
If Che leaves after this season, it looks like it wouldn’t be much of a surprise Lorne Michaels. In the same New York Times story, Michaels said a “year of change” could be in store for his show after this season. However, he made it clear that he preferred to keep Che behind the Weekend Update desk.
“If I had my way, it would be here,” Michaels said. “And I don’t always get my way. But when you have someone who is the real thing, you want to hold out for as long as possible.”
Che isn’t the only SNL cast member who is rumored to be looking out the door. Pete Davidson has often teased him about his final exit, saying in 2020 Interview Who wished that 2019 would be his last year in the series.
“I have a strange feeling in that building where I don’t know which team they are going to play with,” Davidson said. “If I’m joking or I’m into the joke. Really I’d want to [2019] To be last year, but I’m still around and trying to get rid of it.”
Season 47 of “Saturday Night Live” is scheduled to end on May 21, with Natasha Lyonne hosting the season finale and serving Japanese breakfast as the final musical guest.
