PlayStation broke an absolutely unimaginable record for a console

It’s official: Sony Interactive Entertainment has sold more than 500 million home consoles since the launch of the original PlayStation in 1994.. Yes, PlayStation is The first home console brand to reach half a billion markfar surpassing Nintendo and Microsoft.

This incredible feat was achieved thanks to the leap in PlayStation 5 sales. In the last quarter of 2023 alone, Sony shipped 6.3 million PS5s to stores worldwide, bringing total sales of the console to 38.5 million. It’s worth noting, of course, that the PlayStation 2 remains the best-selling home console of all time, at 155 million.

At this point, you might be wondering if this is the first time Sony has done this, and not by accident. In 2018, the company released a PS4 Collector’s Edition to celebrate the sale of 500 million PlayStation consoles. However, this number also included sales of portable consoles such as the PSP and PS Vita, which added nearly 100 million sales to the total.

Sony’s achievement of selling over 500 million home consoles comes with some interesting facts. Firstly, Microsoft, Sony’s direct competitor, entered the game console market when the PS1 had already enjoyed a generation of unprecedented sales, which meant that Sony had a strong start. Microsoft appears to have sold around 185 million home consoles, though that number isn’t entirely reliable, as the company stopped talking about its sales halfway through the Xbox One generation.

On the other hand, Nintendo released its first hardware a decade before the PS1, so in theory, it should have the lead. However, when the number is strictly limited to home consoles and Switch, Nintendo has sold just over 400 million consoles. If handhelds are included, of course, Nintendo’s sales are over 800 million, with half a billion already since the DS and Wii era.
