Google has removed more than 24 malicious Chrome extensions from the official Chrome Web Store. These extensions have been installed over 75 million times by Chrome users, who should remove them from their browsers immediately.
Vladimir Blunt observer Malicious extensions and information about them posted on the Almost Secure blog. Palant reported a total of 34 malicious extensions to Google, but Google did not immediately remove the extensions.
Avast confirmed the results and Google pulled the extensions from the Chrome Web Store. Palant mentioned in a later post that not all of these were malicious extensions. A total of 8 were not removed by Google as they were added later by Palant and thus are not included in Avast’s list.
Many add-ons have had millions of users, such as Autoskip for YouTube which has over 9 million weekly active users.
Extensions detected by Palant include video downloaders, and other extensions that allow users to interact with video or audio, add visual changes, or claim to block ads.
The main problem for Chrome users is that removing extensions from the Chrome Web Store does not remove them from the end user’s browser.
