Microsoft is expected to remove the Windows Mixed Reality platform within a short period, as stated in a statement it issued.
More specifically, Windows Mixed Reality is no longer supported by updates. While the Mixed Reality Portal app, along with all of its SteamVR extensions, will soon be removed. The move appears to have caused serious concern among Windows Mixed Reality headset users, who don't know for sure whether their devices will be usable in the future.
The sudden discontinuation of support caused frustration on social media, with users expressing concerns about the potential obsolescence of their VR/AR headsets.
For your information, Windows Mixed Reality has been one of the most popular features of Windows 10. The platform debuted in 2015 and marked Microsoft's foray into the growing field of mixed reality, which includes augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies.
Initially called Windows Holographic, the platform was renamed in 2017 and has attracted many developers, hosting gaming experiences, professional applications, and educational tools. Despite these expectations and the growing interest in AR and VR technologies, Windows Mixed Reality has struggled to secure a significant market share, facing stiff competition from established players like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
Microsoft's decision to kill Windows Mixed Reality clearly raises questions about the future of the industry in general.
