A woman was sentenced to 74 lashes for not wearing the Islamic hijab

The Iranian judiciary announced that it sentenced an Iranian woman to 74 lashes and a fine on charges of insulting Islamic morals for not wearing the Islamic hijab.

Since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, wearing the hijab (head covering) has been mandatory in Iran for all women, including foreign women, who must cover their hair in public places.

The judiciary's Mizan Online news agency reported last night, “The convict, Roya Heshamati, encouraged tolerance (by going out) in a vile manner in crowded places in Tehran.” Mizan Online added that “the punishment of 74 lashes was carried out in accordance with the law and Sharia” and “for violating people’s morals.”

The convicted woman's lawyer, Maziar Tatati, told Shargh, Iran's leading reformist newspaper, that his client was arrested in April “because she posted a photo of herself on social media without wearing a hijab.”

In recent months, increasing numbers of women have appeared without a hijab in public, particularly after the protest movement sparked by the death in custody in September 2022 of Mekhsa Amini, who was arrested by morality police on charges of violating a strict dress code. In the face of women's acts of disobedience regarding wearing the hijab, the authorities have tried to tighten measures, announcing more inspections, mainly using cameras, and arresting actresses who appear without a hijab on social networks.

In September, Parliament voted in favor of a bill that would increase penalties for people who violate the dress code.
