Io's volcanic activity is responsible for many of its unique features. Its volcanic plumes and lava flows cause significant surface changes and paint the surface in various shades of yellow, red, white, black and green, largely due to allotropes and sulfur compounds.

According to other published studies of Io, the constant pressure comes from a combination of forces, some known and some unknown. It is known that its interior is subject to enormous friction from the gravity of the great planet Jupiter and the other Galilean moons, Europa, Callisto and Ganymede.
