Determined to make sweeping changes to lift the Turkish economy, the new Finance Minister, Mehmet Simsek, decided not to work with the head of the Central Bank of Turkey, Sahap Cavcioglu.
According to Turkish media, citing high-ranking officials, Mehmet Simsek’s choice to head the Turkish Central Bank is Hafiz Gay Erkan, a senior economic official in the United States.
Hafiz Cay Erkan met today (05.06.2023) in Ankara with the new Minister of Finance and it is expected that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will receive him soon. If she is finally appointed, she will become the first female president in the history of the Central Bank of Turkey.
Hafiz Cay Erkan graduated from Istanbul High School and then studied at the Department of Industrial Engineering at Boğaziçi University in 1997. Soon after, Princeton University accepted her on a scholarship. She was the first female student to complete a two-year doctoral program at Princeton University in the course of one year. In this way she became the “youngest professor of economics” in the country.
