Google has finally found a way to “dissuade” Apple

For years there was a major public feud between them apple Which Googlel iMessage. As we’ve reported to you several times in the past, Google has tried to convince Apple to adopt the RCS messaging protocol, the successor to SMS and MMS, without success. He tried from small campaigns to full campaigns with special videos. However, Green balloons Remains.

And now, it seems that Google has finally found a way to “dissuade” Apple. In particular, Google is said to be working behind the scenes with European telecom companies in an attempt to include Apple’s iMessage service on the list of services regulated by the Digital Markets Act. If EU authorities do decide that iMessage is a gatekeeper, Apple will be obligated by law to make iMessage an interoperable service that must work with messaging services on different platforms, such as Google Messages. As part of this effort, Google sent a letter to the European Union, along with support from companies such as Telefónica, Orange, Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom and others.

According to an article in the Financial Times, all of these companies are calling on the EU to fully subject iMessage to the Digital Markets Act, arguing that consumers would greatly benefit from iMessage’s interoperability with other messaging services. The EU believes that iMessage, which comes pre-installed on all iPhones and is available exclusively to users of those devices, indirectly contributes to Apple’s revenue by encouraging buyers to switch to iPhones.

For its part, Apple argues that iMessage is unpopular in Europe and that it does not meet the Digital Markets Act’s requirement of 45 million monthly active users to be considered a “gateway.” Apple also says that iMessage should not be subject to the law because it is completely free and iPhones can work without any interaction with the app.

The EU has until February to make a decision, and as with USB-C, its ruling may be in.

What is RCS and why is there a dispute between Apple and Google:

RCS stands for Rich Communication Services and is a communication protocol between mobile carriers, but also between phones and carriers. Its goal is to replace SMS, because it promises a richer text messaging system, provides phone book searching (to locate services) and can include multimedia.

The problem with Apple and Google is that Apple doesn’t support RCS on its devices, instead using its own iMessage technology which is only compatible with Apple’s own devices. This means that when you text someone with an Android phone using an iPhone, you see green message bubbles instead of blue, and you can’t enjoy RCS features like high-quality photos and videos, group chats, read receipts, and final calls. -endcryption.end.

Google is pushing Apple to adopt RCS, saying it will benefit everyone who sends messages across different platforms. It itself has implemented RCS into its Android Messages app and has worked with Samsung and major carriers to make it the default messaging platform for Android phones. Google has also added support for end-to-end encryption of all conversations in its RCS-based app.

However, Apple has shown no interest in adopting the protocol and has instead focused on improving iMessage, with features such as editing and unsending messages.
