The Italian government is said to be in advanced negotiations with Germany’s KMW to acquire an undisclosed number of tanks currently Leopard 2 Although it is not clear which version will be preferred, the A7 or the latest version, the A8 or something in between, that is, configured for Italian needs.
According to the Italian defense website RID, the cost of the deal could range between 4 and 6 billion euros, while there is a serious possibility that the tanks will be manufactured on Italian soil. Previous statements by the country’s Defense Ministry officials indicated that Italy’s armed forces would need to acquire approx. 125 new tanksto replace part of C 1 Aries Service in the Italian army, i.e. of the kind that will not go through a modernization programme.
