NASA: The first 3D map of the “red” planet is a reality

For the first time, a three-dimensional clockwork map has been created A red planet In its realistic form, through which one can navigate rocky areas sometimes explored by NASA’s robotic exploration vehicles.

Now, scientists and the public can study or enjoy some extraterrestrial images with a spherical, 3D view of the planet Mars. Cliffs, rocks, craters, and even traces of atmospheric dust are captured in stunning detail on the map.

It is a project to unite 110,000 images recorded from around the planet that now yield this groundbreaking result. The initiative was taken by the California Institute of Technology using data from NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, and eventually launched the famous digital map.

The images were taken by the spacecraft’s black-and-white camera, and cover an area of about 25 square meters per pixel. This was done by means of the “Global CTX Mosaic of Mars” which produces the highest resolution images of the planet ever recorded. CTX is one of three such cameras on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). Its ability to capture larger areas of the landscape has made CTX particularly useful for detecting craters on Mars.

The map is a product of Caltech’s Bruce Murray Planetary Visualization Laboratory and took six years and tens of thousands of man-hours to develop. It is so detailed that more than 120 scientific papers have been based on the information provided by the map. Also, anyone can use it quite easily.

“I wanted to make something accessible to everyone,” said Jack Dixon, a project leader and image-processing scientist who runs Murray’s lab. “Even kids can use it now. My mom, who just turned 78, can use it now. The goal is to lower the barriers for people interested in exploring Mars.”
