GoPro has announced the availability of its new action camera, GoPro Hero 12 Black. GoPro’s new action camera has some notable features, including better video stabilization (HyperSmooth) and support for longer continuous video recording.

The camera can record 5.3K video and now adds HDR (High Dynamic Range) to the final result for even more detail. “The new GoPro Hero 12 Black is rugged and lightweight, ready to take on anything, whether on land or in the water,” the company says on the product website.

The new video recording times are made possible thanks to a redesigned power management system, which GoPro says delivers a 2x improvement in shooting times over the previous generation, the Hero 11 Black (note that in the “2x” GoPro mentions, the Enduro battery performance included in the Hero 12 package comes into play Black also plays an important role, so if you use a standard GoPro battery, runtimes will be different).

If you want to use the camera to record videos to post on platforms like TikTok or YouTube Shorts, the new Hero 12 Black offers a new portrait shooting mode in a 16:9 frame. The aforementioned feature, combined with support for Bluetooth-enabled wireless audio devices like AirPods and various microphones, means the Hero 12 could be a good choice for creatives who want to shoot portrait or portrait videos more easily.

The Hero 12 Black offers some additional features that pros may also like. For example, they can capture HDR photos and videos at 5.3K (up to 30 fps 16:9) and 4K (up to 30 fps 8:7 and up to 60 fps 16:9) with the addition GP-Log encoders can enjoy results with a wider dynamic range. They can also use the Timecode Sync feature on an – theoretically – unlimited number of Hero 12 Blacks, to make it easier to edit shots taken from multiple angles to ensure they match. Thanks to a new optional accessory also called Max Lens Mod 2.0, the Hero 12 Black can capture a 177-degree photo at 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. Thanks to the larger lens, the user of the new GoPro camera can benefit from a 36% wider field of view when shooting widescreen video as well as a 48% higher field of view when shooting portrait video.
