Queen Marie of Denmark posts a birthday photo with a family member – and it's not the king

Today, Queen Mary of Denmark celebrates her birthday and turns 52 years old. So, I decided to share a special photo on social media for this special day.

Tasmanian-born Mary is celebrating her first birthday since being crowned Queen of Denmark, after a difficult year that saw many scandals and unrest at the palace.

Rumors of her husband Frederick's infidelity shook the country, and Queen Margaret intervened and handed the throne to her son to save his marriage. The couple seems to be making an effort to look together and loving in their joint public appearances.

However, the 52-year-old Queen decided to share an unpublished photo with her father on the royal family's official Instagram account.

The caption for the photo said: “On the occasion of today, the Queen chose a photo of a special moment with her father from her recent trip to Australia in December.”

In the picture, we see Mary wearing a black shirt and a brown cross-body bag, with her hair braided and sunglasses on her head, while she stands smiling next to her father.

The Queen's father, John Donaldson, is 82 years old, and was unable to travel to Denmark to see his daughter become queen last month due to his age and health condition.

As the photo's caption says, the photo was taken by the Queen's son, 13-year-old Prince Vincent.

Who is the father of the Queen of Denmark?

Mary's father is a Scottish-Australian professor who immigrated to Tasmania in 1963. In addition to British citizenship, Donaldson obtained Australian citizenship in 1975.
