Zuckerberg believes that Apple’s Vision Pro program is for lonely rich people – the Meta

This week, Apple announced the Vision Pro headset, which comes in at $3,499, great specs, and an emphasis on both computing and content consumption.

Now, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has shared his thoughts on Apple’s new headphone.

Zuckerberg shared his thoughts on Vision Pro at an internal company meeting in which he believes Meta has already considered Apple’s solutions to technology challenges.

“From what I first saw, I’d say the good news is that there isn’t some kind of magical solution they might have for any of the limitations in the laws of physics that our teams haven’t already explored and thought about,” he explains.

Zuckerberg added that Apple’s decision to release it with a higher-resolution display and other technology means it “costs seven times more than the Quest 3 and now requires so much power that you now need a battery and a cable attached to it to use it.”

The Facebook co-founder acknowledged that these design choices might make sense for Vision Pro use cases. But, he added, Meta innovates “to make sure our products are as affordable as possible.” He also noted that the Meta Quest hardware focuses on the wearer being “active”.

Every show that’s ever been on (Apple) has been someone sitting alone on the couch. I mean, this might be a vision of the future of computing, but it’s not what I want.

Of particular interest is the fact that Zuckerberg compares the $3,499 Vision Pro to the $500 Meta Quest 3 rather than the $1,500 Quest Pro. This isn’t quite a fair comparison, like comparing a $1,500 smartphone to a $200 model. No one needs to buy a $1,500 smartphone, but in the end you’ll get a better screen, better performance, better cameras, more storage space, and other perks. Anyway, the cost is still high.

However, Apple seems to be taking a very different approach to mixed reality than the Meta and most of its competitors in the space. The company is focusing on it as a computing platform (it does have a Mac-based M2 chipset, after all), though it’s also added some social features and VR-based entertainment options. But it’s worth noting that the Vision Pro doesn’t come with controls like traditional VR headsets, which indicates that it’s not a product for the hardcore VR gaming market.
