A new feature in Google Chrome “turns” websites into apps

The popular browser currently has two options for adding a website to the home screen on your Android phone.

  • First, you can simply create a shortcut. On any website, Chrome supports “add to home screen” via a button in the full menu. This option works with literally anything and just adds a shortcut to the home screen that opens in Chrome.
  • The second option only appears on sites that run as a Progressive Web App. The “Install” button appears instead of the “Add to Home Screen” option. This means that you can only have one choice.

In many cases, Progressive Web Apps may look like native apps on your device. However, they are installed in a very different way. Instead of going through the traditional app store, the process is handled by your browser.

Once enabled, you'll find an expandable Add to Home Screen button in the full menu on all Chrome websites. Clicking on it will give you a choice between a home screen shortcut and a PWA, possibly depending on availability. This is a welcome change that gives users more flexibility and eliminates confusion.
