Belgium: Resignation of the Minister of Justice

Jihadist terrorism has returned to Europe after the shooting attack on the 45-year-old man last Monday (16.10.2023). Two Swedes fell dead Who went to Brussels to watch their national team’s football match against the Belgium national team

As Van Quickenborn noted, “This morning at 9 a.m., I noticed this: On August 15, 2022, there was an extradition request from Tunisia for this man. This request was sent on September 1, as it should have been, by the legal expert to the Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office. The competent judge did not respond to this extradition request, and the file was not processed.”

He stressed that “Individual error. Huge mistake. An unacceptable error. A mistake has serious consequences. The independence of the judge is the foundation of our rule of law. I have always defended this principle and will continue to defend it. “As Minister of Justice, I cannot, under any circumstances, interfere in a judge’s decisions.”

“Although this is the work of a single, independent judge, I still want to take responsibility for this unacceptable error. I am not looking for any pretext at all. I am not looking for excuses. I feel it is my duty to do so,” he concluded. Vincent van Quickenborn.
