Final Fantasy XVI: Major drop in retail sales compared to Final Fantasy 15

the Final Fantasy XVI It debuted on June 22nd exclusively on PlayStation 5, and has garnered stellar reviews, after we reported to you that it instantly rose to One of the highest rated games of the year. However, the reviews don’t seem to translate directly into sales, at least when it comes to UK retail market.

In detail, Christopher Dring, President of the popular media company GamesIndustry.biz revealed that while the title took first place in the UK weekly retail charts, the comparison with the previous chapter in the series is not good at all.

Specifically, Ding said:

Final Fantasy XVI is the #1 game this week in the UK, but in terms of its retail debut, it wasn’t particularly strong. Sales of physical copies are 74% less than corresponding retail sales of Final Fantasy 15 in 2016. Obviously, digital is a much larger portion of sales today, but those numbers come out later.

Final Fantasy 16 sold out 74% less retail copies in the UK in launch week on PS5, compared to Final Fantasy 15’s corresponding launch week in November 2016 on Xbox One and PS4.

Of course, we can’t conclude much yet, because digital sales now account for a large percentage of the total for most games, compared to the beginning of the previous generation. Until we have this data, we can’t judge how good the title’s commercial debut really is, while it’s worth noting again that there may be differences, since this time we’re talking about an exclusive rather than a multi-platform release.
