A bombshell came out of nowhere in the NBA, as Giannis Antetokounmpo signed an early three-year extension with the Milwaukee Bucks. Until the summer of 2028, the new contract guarantees the Greek Frick another $186 million.

A few days ago he stated that he had no reason to sign an early extension with the Bucks this year because “Money is not important, but a lot is important“If he had waited until the summer of 2024, he would have received a much larger sum, but Giannis Antetokounmpo pulled the trigger and in the early hours of Tuesday (10/24) agreed with the Milwaukee team on an extension for another three years in exchange for a contract.” Total $186 million!

What does this mean; His contract will expire in the summer of 2028, not the summer of 2025 or 2026, as we knew. “Milwaukee, let’s get it“Antetokounmpo wrote on his social media accounts, expressing his joy and sending everyone to… a bucket for the evaluations they had made, in his words. If the Greek maniac signs a year from now, he will receive a four-year instead of a three-year extension and a bonus of 70 Million dollars.

Of course, an early extension doesn’t mean he’ll stay in Milwaukee until the summer of 2028 (his option for the 2027/28 season is his, and he could hit the market in the summer of 2027 if he opts out). The acquisition of Damian Lillard was certainly a move by the front office that showed him that the Bucks really wanted to make a championship while they had them, with Giannis loving the organization he invested in in the summer of 2013 when others passed him by.

Giannis’ earnings per season

  • 2023/24 – $45,640,084
  • 2024/25 – $48,787,676
  • 2025/26 – $57,604,893
  • 2026/27 – $62,213,285
  • 2027/28 – $66,821,676

Bucks GM Jon Horst met with Antetokounmpo’s agent Alex Sarazzi on Sunday in Chicago, according to Adrian Wojnarowski, and the two men shook hands when Giannis signed a very early extension with Milwaukee. The deadline ended at midnight (11:59 PM EST), with the sides playing catch-up and sticking together with the goal of winning more championships.

Antetokounmpo is entering the eleventh season of his professional career and in the summer of 2028 he will complete his fifteenth season. It’s clearly possible he could sign another early extension before his active contract expires, but it now seems very likely that we’ll see him finish his career wearing just one team’s jersey. As Kobe Bryant did, Dirk Nowitzki, and as Steph Curry looks set to do.

For the record, in the summer of 2028 it is very likely that Giannis will have exceeded the 500 million exclusive mark on his contracts with the Bucks. Not counting his earnings from other deals/sponsorships, which annually are now close to his NBA earnings.
