In the vastness of space, even the most terrifying shapes can appear, as a haunting image recently released by… NASA.
The mysterious structure is the result of a pulsar, a highly magnetized rotating neutron star, and the associated pulsar wind nebula. At the base of the “palm” of this cosmic hand is the pulsar known as PSR B1509-58, left over from a supernova explosion about 1,600 years ago. As it rotates, this neutron star emits jets of matter and antimatter from its poles, as well as strong winds.
This stunning image was captured by NASA using a state-of-the-art X-ray telescope, which observed the star for about 17 days. By collecting data from the Chandra X-ray telescope, NASA revealed this amazing image.
What makes this image even more interesting is its ability to provide information about the magnetic field of the ‘hand’. Roger Romani, of Stanford University in California, explained that the X-ray data appears to reveal the “bones” of the structure.
