His unimaginable three-point percentage in the EuroLeague and the way he shoots the ball

His unimaginable three-point percentage in the EuroLeague and the way he shoots the ball

Giorgos Papagiannis has had an excellent start to the EuroLeague season with Fenerbahce, and it’s clear that he now plays an extended role. Look at his terrible three-point percentage and the way he handled those attempts.

Giorgos Papagiannis decided to turn the page on his career this year, when he agreed with Fenerbahce. He went into a new environment, and he knew he would need to do other things. So far, he seems to be adjusting to a new role that calls for him to move more as a Stretch-5 perimeter shooting center.

Only in the first show of the season, in the win over Armani Milano (85-82), Papagiannis showed almost what the world can expect from him. He finished with 15 points on 3/3 three-pointers and moved largely as a stretch 5. This was the beginning for the international center, who has now settled into that role. This was helped by his obscene three-point percentage.

His position…76.9% and the way he performed

After 7 Euroleague games, Papagiannis has made 10/13 three-pointers (1.4/1.9 per game), which translates to 76.9%! The international center attempts nearly two and three-pointers per game (1.9 to be exact), when he broke the record last year with 1.1 attempts per game from 6.75 metres. Below is a chart of the shots he attempted from the three-point line:

In the circle of successful shots, with “x” for missed shots.

According to Hudl Instat, Papagiannis made 6/9 three-pointers in catch-and-shoot situations (66.6%) and 4/4 in catch-and-shoot situations (100%)! The sample is certainly small, but it shows Fenerbahce and Dimitris Itoudis’ flair for how to get the most out of Papagiannis.

This obscene 76.9% percentage on three-pointers taken by Papagiannis is considered unsustainable in the long term. Last year (2022/23), he shot 48.6% from the 6.75 meter line (18/37 three-pointers). The footage is certain to continue to be there for the international centre, who just needs to get the attempts he has been given. If it continues, it may go down in the world’s memory as Stretch-5.
