Jet ski crash at Irapetra: 32-year-old operator arrested – 10 in critical condition

Two people have been arrested in connection with the accident.

The Coast Guard has made an arrest in connection with a jet ski accident at Magris Gialos Beach in Irapetra on Wednesday afternoon, July 12, which left a 10-year-old boy seriously injured.

According to the Ierapetra Port Authority, both the 32-year-old jet ski operator and the lessor of the marine recreational equipment have been arrested.

In particular, according to information provided by the Ierapetra Port Authority, the lessor of marine recreational vehicles was arrested for violating 291 par.3 of the PC. (Interventions in traffic safety) and 314 para 2 of the Criminal Code (bodily damage caused by negligence), the procedure for imposing administrative sanctions was initiated.

A 32-year-old local operator of the jet ski was also arrested for violating Section 291 par.3 of the Civil Code. (interferences in the safety of traffic) and 314 para 2 of the Criminal Code (bodily damage due to negligence).

A 10-year-old boy, who rode the jet ski with the 32-year-old, has been admitted to the PAGNI Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in critical condition with severe brain injuries and is fighting for his life.

According to neakriti.gr, it is important that his health remains stable for the next 48 hours to avoid any risk. A CT scan on him showed that he had skull fractures and blood clots that everyone hoped would be absorbed by his healthy, strong, young body.

How did the accident happen?

A 10-year-old boy and his family were enjoying a holiday in Crete. While they were in the Ormos area of Makris Gyalos, the 10-year-old decided to take a jet ski and ride with the 32-year-old.

As they returned to the beach, instead of slowing down, the 32-year-old appears to have pressed the gas even harder, causing the jet ski they were riding to be “pinned” into the wooden facilities used by the speedboat rental business Makris. Gialos Beach.

The clash was fierce and both were injured. The 32-year-old was taken to a local health center for treatment of his injuries, while the 10-year-old was initially taken to Irapetra Hospital and later to PAGNI.

What the eyewitness says

As he told the doctor Heracles from Korea, one of the first to help the boy: “While we were sitting in the yard, we noticed that a jet ski on the road did not slow down, but went at a high speed. We were impressed that he didn’t stop and we waited for a maneuver. Finally the jet ski disappeared from my field of vision and I heard a loud crash.

A doctor who rushed to the scene of the accident and is on vacation in Crete said, “The child was sitting in front. When I arrived at the scene, the child had jumped on the jet ski and the adult was on the right side under the jet ski. Both were lying on the head with a pool of blood. We immediately called 166 and started to protect the injuries.

The 32-year-old is an experienced jet ski operator

“From what I learned, the 10-year-old boy, whose mother Makris is from Gialos and grew up with her family in Germany, as well as a 32-year-old friend of the family who drives a jet ski. , finished their walk in the sea and took the runway to where they had to park the jet ski, further from the shore, towards the end point. Entered at low speed.

For some unknown reason they didn’t slow down, entered the finish line at full speed, hit a wooden pole in front of the structure where the watercraft was kept and ran flat. The water sports owner, who could stop the jet ski using a remote control in his hands, had no time to react as he trusted the 32-year-old who could see him heading towards the finish line. The child sitting in front of the driver hit his head on a wooden fixed point and started bleeding immediately, while the 32-year-old behind him suffered minor injuries.

The 32-year-old was an experienced jet ski operator who worked in the water sports rental business, and I was impressed as the incident was described to me. Bad timing and carelessness are the cause of the accident.

However, the entire local community of Makris Gialos is shocked by the child’s injury and the manner in which the accident happened, as it is extremely rare to be injured by a jet ski on the ground. Injuries are usually recorded by these water mopeds in the sea, not on shore,” said Mr. Manolis Vrygionakis, Deputy Mayor of Makris Gialos Municipal Unit, to neakriti.gr.
