Recognizing the independence of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan appeared defiant in his speech before the United Nations, one day before the meeting with Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pledged today before the United Nations General Assembly that he would “intensify his (diplomatic) efforts” to “put an end to the war” in Ukraine.

Erdogan said from the hall, “Since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war, we have been trying to keep our Russian and Ukrainian friends at the (negotiating) table, believing in the idea that there will be no winners in war and there will be no losers in peace.” For the General Assembly.

Referring to the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, the Turkish President said that his country supports the steps taken by Azerbaijan to preserve its territorial integrity. He stressed that Nagorno-Karabakh is part of Azerbaijani territory and that imposing a different regime on this enclave is “unacceptable.”

The Turkish Foreign Ministry also described the “concerns” that led to the Azerbaijani military operation in Nagorno-Karabakh as “reasonable,” although it called on Azerbaijan and Armenia to return to dialogue.
