The latest version of the Nearby Share app, the Android and Windows alternative to Apple – Google’s AirDrop, is now available

Nearby Share is Google’s version of AirDrop for the Apple ecosystem, allowing you to share files wirelessly with other nearby Android devices.

But for Nearby Share to become a true AirDrop alternative for Android users, it needs to be available on other devices or platforms and not just Android smartphones. Google expanded the ability to share files wirelessly with Chromebooks in 2021, and at CES 2022, the company promised to bring ShareShare to Windows. The app, long awaited, finally came out in beta in April 2023, and as of this week, the final version is out for everyone.

in Announcing itGoogle reports that since its beta launch, Neighborhood Sharing has been installed on more than 1.7 million Windows computers worldwide. Users have used the wireless file transfer feature to transfer more than 50 million files between computers and Android devices, be it smartphones or tablets.

With the first stable release of Nearby Share for Windows, Google is making two major improvements to the app. First, the estimated transfer time will be displayed so that you know how long it will take to transfer the files. Second, when you send photos from your phone, your Windows PC will display a preview to make sure the correct file was sent.

Google has also partnered with HP to pre-install it on the Dragonfly Pro line of laptops. You can use the Nearby Sharing app on a PC with Windows 10 64-bit or later. ARM devices are not currently supported and your computer must have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. When transferring files wirelessly, the two devices must be on the same network and within 5 meters of each other.
