Australia: A 15-year-old boy was mauled by a shark in front of his father

The father of a 15-year-old boy who died after being attacked by a shark in a popular surf spot on South Australia's Yorke Peninsula is shocked.

The shark attacked the teenager who was surfing, and cut off his leg. The police and ambulance were immediately called to the scene, but despite the efforts of the doctors, they were unable to save him.

“The shark grabbed his leg and ran over another resident, who got on his board and paddled towards him to rescue him. The shark circled around them as the man pulled the boy out of the water. There was a lot of blood. He brought him to shore, but I think it's time,” one local told a local newspaper. It's too late now.”

The national park, located at the entrance to the Spencer Gulf, is very popular with tourists, fishermen and surfers, and is known for its sometimes strong currents and big waves.

One resident, who had been surfing in the area for decades, estimated the victim was probably about “30 to 40 meters from shore” given the conditions.

In addition, he stated that the victim had recently traveled to the area with his family, stressing that he was concerned about the apparent increase in shark numbers.

Repeated attacks

The shark attack is the latest of many to occur in South Australian waters in recent months.

In November, another surfer was killed on the West Coast near Streaky Bay.

The 55-year-old was knocked off his board by a shark while paddling in the waters near Granites Beach.
