Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II will use Blizzard’s controversial SMS protection system – Activision Blizzard

When the next Call of Duty launches on October 28, fans of the game will need to register a phone number in their Battle.net account to play it.

“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, accounts created for the recently released Overwatch 2 as well as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare accounts require a phone number,” it reads. support page From the game that has just been updated and monitored computer games.

News of this requirement comes after a week of controversy over SMS Protect, the mobile notification system used by Overwatch 2 and soon Modern Warfare II. After a troubled launch due to a DDoS attack that prevented many from playing Overwatch 2 on its release day, Blizzard announced that it would back down from the requirement.

Now instead of all players having to associate a phone number with their Battle.net account, this requirement is now restricted to new Overwatch players only. In part, the scheme has been controversial because “certain prepaid” numbers cannot be used with SMS Protect. In addition, during the past few days, players who also subscribed to mobile service providers such as Cricket Wireless, were unable to play the game.

It’s currently not clear if all Warzone 2.0 players will need a mobile phone number to play the game when it launches on November 16. As of 2020, Infinity Ward requires all users of the free PC version of Warzone to go through a two-factor authentication process.
