After the western provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan faced the fiery nightmare at the beginning of May, it was the turn of the eastern part of Canada, especially Nova Scotia and Quebec.

Since the start of the year, more than 27 million acres have burned in Canada, eight times as much as the average for 30 years, according to official figures.

There are currently 214 active outbreaks, including 93 wildfires that are out of control, across Canada.

New wildfires in Quebec

Since Thursday, several new fires have broken out in Quebec, mainly in areas near the Saint Laurent River.

On Friday afternoon, the authorities asked for the army’s help to transport emergency equipment, food and fuel. “Things are changing quickly in Quebec,” Representative Stéphane Lauzon explained.

“About 10,000 people have been evacuated as a precaution on the Sette-Ile side and another 1,000 on the Chappe side,” said François Bonardelle, Minister of Public Security in the Quebec provincial government.

Global Warming

Hundreds of firefighters from the United States, Mexico, South Africa and Portugal have been called in to help put out the fires.

Canada, which is affected much faster by global warming due to its geographical location compared to the rest of the world, has experienced extreme weather events in recent years, the intensity and frequency of which are increasing due to climate change.
