Florida “drowned” by storms – they closed the airport and schools

Severe storms lashing Florida caused flooding today in the Miami metropolitan area, forcing authorities to close schools and, at least until tomorrow morning, Fort Lauderdale International Airport.

More than 635 mm of water fell in 24 hours in Fort Lauderdale, a city of 180,000 people north of Miami, according to the US Weather Service. A figure higher than the record set in April 1979 of 370 mm.

Heavy rains caused many traffic jams, flooded roads leading to the airport and many flights were cancelled.

“calamity!” Rob Gully, a tourist who was about to leave with his wife for the Bahamas, told the local Sun Sentinel newspaper. “It’s the first time my wife and I have gone away together since Covid,” he said, “and this is how it is.”

The authorities initially hoped that air traffic would return as of today, but had to postpone reopening the airport until tomorrow in order to clear the runways.

Coastal areas of the city of Miami remain on a flood alert, with lands saturated with water and more rain expected.
