A completely blind man regains his sight thanks to a “miraculous” operation performed by doctors in Turin
Very important scientific progress has been made today in Turin, Italy, specifically in the field of ophthalmology, according to Italian newspaper reports.
Thanks to autotransplantation of the entire surface of the eye (including the cornea, part of the sclera and conjunctiva), the blind patient was able to partially restore his sight.
The operation took place at Le Molinete Hospital in Turin. The patient is 83 years old and has lost vision in the left eye for 30 years due to a retinal problem. Ten years ago he was also blind in his right eye due to a rare disease. Autotransplantation was made possible by the use of material from the left eye, “which led to functional problems, but preserved a healthy surface,” the experts explain.
According to the Italian press, the operation took four hours, and after four weeks the patient was able to recognize faces and objects and now moves independently.
