It’s 2023 and someone bought a new, sealed Wii U from a regular store

Yes, you read that correctly. Six whole years ago Nintendo Officially withdrawn Wee yo, stop supplying stores with new consoles. However, it became just a small one Wonder GamesAfter recording the first new sale of the year! Yes, someone found a sealed Wii U, in a regular retail store, in 2023, and bought it.

This bizarre sale is the first since May 2022 that was not made by an individual on platforms like eBay, but by a legitimate retailer, according to Matt Piscatella, a video game industry analyst who works for Circana, formerly known as NPD.

The standard process for discontinued consoles is for stores to sell their remaining inventory, and after a period of time, the manufacturer takes back any unsold units. Major retail chains, such as Walmart and Best Buy in America, typically maintain strict inventory control, making such a sale unlikely to occur in their stores.

Online speculation suggests the sale may have taken place at a smaller, non-gaming store. Stores like FYE in America, which mainly deal in music and movies, are sometimes slow to update their inventory when it comes to video games. So they sometimes keep a stock of “old” games, which may not be playable due to their servers being down. It’s possible that a store like this, ignored by Nintendo, had a forgotten new Wii U collecting dust on shelves somewhere. Perhaps an enthusiastic player or perhaps an employee who found it in the warehouse is the reason for this purchase. Surprisingly, the product code was still active, prompting Circana to receive a report of the sale as usual.

This incident, as funny as it may seem, is not unique in the history of the industry. Last year, for example, three brand new, sealed PS Vitas were sold. Accordingly, a mysterious purchase also took place in 2018, when someone bought a sealed copy of Sonic: The Hedgehog 2 for Game Gear from a regular store!
