During the Intel Innovation Conference keynote event, Samsung Display CEO JS Choi took to the stage to showcase a personal computer prototype that scales from a 13-inch tablet to a 17-inch screen with a simple movement.
“We are announcing the world’s first 17-inch sliding display for PC,” Choi said. “This device will meet the different needs of a larger screen combined with portability,” he explained. Samsung Display has chosen to implement sliding (rather than folding) technology for flexible PC screens, and Choi seems to indicate that foldable display technology isn’t the future of PCs, at least for now.
Intel has been experimenting with new PC form factors for years, initially preparing for a dual-screen foldable future before Microsoft abandoned its plans to bring Windows 10X to foldable systems. New PCs based on new form factors are in dire need of the right software and applications to take advantage of the benefits they offer to the user, and it is not yet clear how Intel will make slidable PCs a reality.
The prototype device presented by Samsung Display and Intel essentially turns a 13-inch tablet into a 17-inch screen with a flexible display and sliding mechanism. Intel was quick to show off its new Unison software in this screen, which aims to connect smartphones to computers running Intel processors.
A sliding PC is just an idea at the moment, and no word from Intel or Samsung Display on when or if it will become a reality.
