The War in Ukraine: An Alert for Zaporizhia

The situation at the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, at Zaporizhia, Ukraine, according to German media group Funke. Ukraine’s state energy company, Energoatom, said Russia was transporting soldiers and military vehicles to the plant site.

“The condition of the equipment and personnel is deteriorating,” Energoatom Petro Kotin, president of the Funke Group, told the Funke Group.

The nuclear power plant has been closed

As announced 24 hours ago, the operation of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant has been suspended, in case of any “provocation” by the Ukrainian forces. Russia seized nuclear power facilities during the early days of its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

It is expected that the Ukrainian army will soon start its long-awaited counter-offensive to recapture Ukrainian lands. Zaporizhia is likely to be one such area, where in recent days the Russians have been evacuating residents of communities close to the front line. It is estimated that 3,000 people, including 1,000 children, have been displaced from their homes.
