Twitter-style app coming soon to… Instagram – Instagram

Instagram is said to be working on an app to rival Twitter, where text – rather than images – will play the dominant role.

According to a leaked slide, the app is codenamed P92 or Barcelona and will allow users to log in with their Instagram username and password. Followers, Wizard, Bio, and Verification will be the same as the main Instagram app. The app will have a stream where users can post text messages of up to 500 characters with links, photos, and videos attached. The design of the app appears to be a mixture of Instagram and Twitter and there is a possibility that it will appear even next month. Other information indicates that although it is being released as a standalone app, its functionality will also be integrated into the main Instagram app.

Meta seems to have added pretty good controls right from the start, allowing users to control who can reply to them and report on their accounts. Accounts banned on Instagram will not have the necessary rights for the new service. The new Instagram text app will also have a decentralization component and will soon be compatible with other similar apps like Mastodon. Users in other apps will be able to search for, follow, and interact with profiles and content that are public or private and have been approved as followers.

If the new app eventually becomes widely available, it could make Instagram a more popular destination for sharing tweet-like updates. With the continuous developments on Twitter, many people are looking for a new platform to share their thoughts. While platforms like Mastodon and Bluesky have seen some success, the text-based Instagram app will provide a way for people who have already built a following on the platform to keep posting without having to start over on a new platform.

Meta declined to comment on the rumors, but did provide a statement in March about its efforts to explore an independent, decentralized social network for sharing text updates.
