Lower Achaya: Thriller with the cause of death of two children

Prosecutorial intervention Unanswered questions Caused by the death of two children from the same family in Kato Achaia within a year.

These are children aged 19 days and two months who died within 15 months. From the histopathological examinations submitted on the body of the 19-day-old child who died in 2022, it appears that the child’s death was due to pathological causes, particularly respiratory infection.

“I will not rush. I want to wait for the results of the genetic test to see if this is really the cause of death,” medical researcher Dimitris Galanderis told ERT.

We got our first look at the post-mortem where both the children’s bodies were autopsied. According to the latest information, from the histopathological examinations submitted on the body of the 19-day-old baby who died in 2022, it appears that the baby’s death was due to pathological causes, particularly respiratory infection. They appear clean as to how the toxicology tests performed on the child’s body were submitted. A sample is expected to be taken from an infant who died a week before the age of two months.

Genetic testing is also underway by Patras’ Forensic Service and the medical examiner who investigated the specific cases to determine if there is any genetic problem associated with the deaths of the two children.

Patras’ appellate prosecutor has already intervened and ordered a preliminary examination to determine the circumstances of the two infants’ deaths. The 23-year-old mother and the children’s grandmother have already testified. The same grandmother has even said that she does not seem to have anything to do with the mother in the whole affair. It was a difficult case, a difficult family situation, and there was a misunderstanding.

This was also indicated by the “Smile of the Child” call for intervention in this particular family where the 23-year-old mother had been living in an abusive environment since she was a 15-year-old child.

“With genetic testing, we can confirm whether or not there is a specific disease behind.”

“A death at this age is always a mystery. It always requires an investigation and we must always cover all the possible death heads. Possible causes of death. If there is criminal activity we must completely rule out and of course see if the death was due to pathological causes. What kind of pathology are these, ie. If they are congenital or genetic, or ultimately some pathological cause that appeared after birth,” explained medical researcher Dimitris Galanderis.
When it was pointed out to him that “the first child, according to the report, ended up with a respiratory infection,” he replied:

“The histopathology proved a respiratory infection. I’m not in a hurry. I want to wait for the genetic results to see if it’s actually the cause of death. Why does a respiratory infection have to occur, develop, spread and cause death. I mean, it takes time, and it wants to do damage. So, It may be and cause death, but it may not be.”

As he pointed out, “I believe that once the genetic test is done, that is, after this chapter is closed, because it is the biggest chapter in this age, we will be able to reach the cause of death. Confirm whether there is any special disease behind it or not.”
