An image taken by NASA’s Perseverance rover has caught the attention of scientists and social media users because it depicts a mysterious donut-shaped rock on the surface of Mars.
What is an Earth-shaped rock doing there? There are a few theories. But the Martian “donut” is one of the most recent objects recorded within 100 meters of its delta Jezero Crater Thanks to the SuperCam Remote Micro-Imager, which features NASA’s cutting-edge rover and helps scientists see what’s on the surface of the Red Planet.
However, the Perseverance team did not instruct the rover to approach the donut-shaped rock to examine it and take a sample, so its composition and origin remain unknown, according to J.M. Rice, associate research scientist at the University of Arizona. Rice first spotted the rock on June 14.
The rocks found in this region of Mars are usually sedimentary sandstones that are probably a few billion years old.
