Mexico: A bloodbath in celebration

Local authorities said that at least 12 people were killed early Sunday morning in an armed attack during a celebration in the city of Salvaterra in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato.

The prosecutor’s office in Guanajuato, one of the most violent Mexican states due to the presence of criminal gangs, said in a post on the X platform: “So far, 12 people have lost their lives,” without giving further details.

According to the authorities, dozens of wounded were transferred to hospitals. Local media reported that the massacre occurred when gunmen opened fire on those attending a “posada”, a traditional Mexican celebration held in the days before Christmas, in the large Rancho San Jose del Carmen, which is usually rented out to vacationers.

The victims were young people who were participating in pre-Christmas celebrations, according to the Tierra Negra Foundation, which promotes social projects in the region. Guanajuato, home to a large number of automobile and aerospace factories, has in recent years become one of the most violent states in the country, amid conflicts between powerful drug trafficking gangs and fuel theft, among other crimes.

Similar attacks have occurred in recent years in the state of Guanajuato, which has witnessed the largest number of murders since the beginning of the year, with 3,029 deaths, according to official figures.

Since December 2006, when the federal government launched a controversial military crackdown on drug trafficking, more than 420,000 people have been killed in the country, most of them victims of crime.
