The immortal jellyfish is the only creature on Earth that can live forever

It seems that the secret of eternal life lies in the jellyfish that have been swimming in the Earth’s oceans for millions of years. The “immortal jellyfish” got its name because theoretically it can live forever. These tiny creatures roamed the Earth before the dinosaurs became extinct, 66 million years ago.

Its scientific name is Turritopsis dohrnii And when it gets old or injured, it can cheat death by reverting to the form of polyps. It accomplishes this by sucking its tentacles as it sinks to the bottom as a mass of undifferentiated cells. From there, the tumor grows back producing a new adult form that is genetically identical to the previous form.

The immortal jellyfish was first discovered in 1883, but it took another century (accidentally) to discover its eternal life cycle while in captivity. Since then, laboratory research has shown that immortal jellyfish can go through this life cycle up to 10 times in two years, proving that they are biologically immortal.

Despite the research, scientists still don’t understand how the immortal jellyfish survives for so long. In 2022, genetic research has identified more than 1,000 genes associated with aging and DNA repair. If scientists can determine which genes are present and which are absent in immortal jellyfish compared to their “mortal” relatives, we may discover the mechanism of eternal life.
